Rice Vegan Cheese: A Product Review

I was contacted by the folks at Galaxy Foods to see if I would like to sample some of their new rice cheese. I'm really not one to turn down free food, but I will admit that I am skeptical of vegan cheese. The kids like it, but I would rather just do without for the most part. Despite these caveats, they still sent me the cheese. There are three flavours: Pepper Jack, Cheddar, and American. So, I put the cheese to the test. First up, classic grilled cheese with the cheddar. The flavour was good (for fake cheese), and it melted quickly and easily (which is a big plus).
Next up, potato quesedillas with the pepper jack. I did sample some of the cheese before cooking and, quite frankly, the texture was terrible: grainy, yet pasty. But, when melted in the quesedilla, it was much better.

Lastly, Tofu English Muffin Sandwiches for brunch with the American flavour. This one actually does not taste too bad uncooked and it was a nice addition to the sandwich.

So, in the final analysis the cheese was better than I expected. On the plus side, it melts well, is soy free (if that matters to you), and tastes better than most vegan cheeses. On the downside, it has a lot of packaging since each individual slice is wrapped in plastic inside a plastic package. It would be nice to see this as a block to cut down on the plastic.

Aside from rice, what is it made of?

Is this a new product? Obviously it has "vegan" and "casein free" plastered on it, but I've never seen that product in stores (only what I'd assumed is a predecessor which is not vegan and yep, contains casein).

WE love this cheese. One of the best ones on the market. You are one lucky blogger!

This is what I use, but then I have no choice (soy intolerance). It isn't bad, I just wish it didn't only come in slices, that would make it a lot more usuable.

I love vegan cheese and I hope this arrive in Ireland (I saw they have some products in UK, I'll try to find this new ones) because I'd love to have a soy free option!

I love the American flavor on Black Bean Burgers. It's amazing!

Great pictures and thanks for the product review. I just recently used the Rice-American flavor in a breakfast sandwich and it turned out better that I thought. Have you ever tried the tofutti brand of cheese?

i have seen that and always been skeptical of trying it. maybe now i will!

This product has casein in it, which is a milk protein, and is therefore not really vegan.

I've definitely found that Galaxy brand cheese tastes best melted. I don't know if I've tried the rice cheese or not (I think just the soy kind), but I wish they'd send me some freebies! That McMuffin looks so delicious.

Anonymous,
That was the old rice cheese--this is the newest incarnation: casein free. See how the label says "vegan?"

I found it to be grainy and pastey in a sandwich, but much better melted and enjoyed while hot - really good melted on a Sol burger!

I would be interested to hear about Tofutti slices, although I haven't seen them around here yet. Are they okay?

Cool, I didn't know they came out with more vegan flavors. This is actually one of the only vegan cheese options that I even remotely like....and I've tried everything from Vegan Rella to Teese.

they're called quesAdillas!! I know maybe you call them different because they're vegan, but it kind of gets on my nerves hahaha

As someone who soy free matters to, I'm very jealous that you have this available to you! You've made some yummy creations with it!

The vegan police are out to get you! Apparently they did not look at the picture.

I'm very skeptical of vegan cheese as well but you have tempted me to try it. We shall see...

Thanks for the review. I'm with you on the individual slice plastic coverings. The only thing is being single, the blocks go bad on me too fast or I have to eat too much of the cheeze to finish it off. I like most vegan cheeses I have tried so I'll be on the look out for this one too. I hope regular groceries will carry it.

Wouldn't it be nice if vegan cheese didn't have carrageenan in it?

Oh VeganDad PLEASE share what you do to make a Tofu Engligh Muffin Sandwich? I've been wondering how to go about getting an 'egg-like' slice of tofu onto a sandwich? I LOVE my tofu scrambles, but let's face it, all those crumblies do NOT stay in the bread... how'd you flavor your slice!!??
Thanks! It always looks so wonderful! :)

Holy crap, I've had this in my fridge for a month and was so far afraid to try it. I just made grilled cheese with the American style and it's better than any else I've had. It needs salt, though.

Now that you've tried Dayia, would you say that this one is better? We're still on the lookout for a decent vegan cheese.
