Happy Birthday Son #2

Yesterday was Son #2's birthday and so that meant cake decorating for me. As you know, I always let the kids pick whatever cake they want and I make it. This year was the first time I used one of those character cake pans--I felt a little less creative but I can't argue with the results. The cake was a double recipe of Isa and Terry's basic vanilla cupcake batter with buttercream icing. Yes, vegan kids can have fun birthdays too.

Happy birthday to your son!
Your cake is fabulous, and I know a little boy who'd have loved it! Actually, my nephew had asked for a Wall-E cake for his birthday too, and just like you, his parents couldn't just buy one at the store: he's allergic to all bovine proteins and to eggs.
That's one of the things I love about vegan baking: I can bake stuff that everyone in my omnivorous family (I'm the only veg) will be able to enjoy, including this little dude. It's a delight to see how happy it makes him to feel included when he gets to eat the same cake we're all having!

That looks incredible! Nicely done, Vegan Dad.

I love Wall-E. It has to be the best post-apocalyptic children's movie EVER.

I LOVE this cake! What an awesome decorating job! My kids birthday's are next week and I get to do cake decorating then. I just recently found the Vegan Cupcakes (thanks btw because I came across a post of yours about these cupcakes) I have not made cakes/icing in years because I did could not find good vegan recipes but now I get to do all that again and my kids get to eat cake again! And for my son (and me) who are allergic to eggs and dairy this will be the first time for him (and many years for me) that he gets to have a 'fun' birthday cake and actually get to eat it!

Impressive decorating! I love Isa and Terry's cupcake book! did you have to adjust the baking temperature/time since you did cake rather than cupcakes?

Very professional! I have never been a particularly good cake decorator, that was my sister's speciality. But the boys never lacked for some kind of cake!

Oh my gosh, that is an amazing looking Wall-E cake and it's VEGAN! I bet your son loved it :)

Vegan Dad said...

To all who asked: the food colouring is the gel kind. It is more vibrant than the liquid and keeps the icing from getting too runny.

This is quite possibly the best cake I have ever experienced in my life. Your son is so lucky to have such an awesome person for a dad.

I was just showing my 16 year old daughter the cake. She is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. We believe in owning your own business- so we have been showing her lots of things she can do on her own.. she loved the cake..
