Thai Fishless Sauce

It's been a long time since I've tasted fish sauce, but I think this simple recipe does a nice job rounding out a Thai curry with a salty taste o' the sea.  I'm guessing it's actually nothing like fish sauce but I think it works better than soy sauce or hoisin sauce.  You could use any mixture of seaweed, I think, but I went with nori because it is more readily available at grocery stores what with sushi's popularity.

INGREDIENTS
Makes 1 cup
- 2 sheets nori, crumbled
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 cup boiling water

METHOD
1. Place all ingredients in a blender (or in a container and use a hand blender).   Let sit for 5 mins, then blend until smooth.  Strain through a fine mesh sieve.  Store in the fridge.

I never knew you could make this! I just buy vegetarian fish sauce at the Asian markets.

Thanks, this is great. I struggled with how to get that fishy taste for a tom kha recipe I did - I tried dulse flakes but they don't blend the way nori would. I'll look forward to using this the next time. I love your blog, by the way!

I have to try this! Ahwile back, I found a vegan fish sauce and loved the taste, but it had msg in it. I have not been able to find a sub since. I'm hoping this gives my pad thai that extra flavor it needs!

This will be great for the many Thai dishes I make. I usually just omit but this will be much better.

I made a thai curry a few days ago thinking it was excellent but missing something. I remember kind of shrugging thinking "it's probably fish sauce and well I guess I'll never know" so thanks for this. I have nearly mastered a thai curry and now there's some hope!!

i wonder now if when i ordered thai veggie dishes the sauce had fish in it.

This sounds great! I appreciate the recipe for a homemade version over the store bought kinds which are probably loaded with MSG. Thanks for sharing.

I think this is good ...as I am turning vegan I still have some problems with the sauces which I thought could not be replaced.Electronic Medical Records

What a great idea! I'm always having a hard time figuring out what to do with the fish sauce issue since I'm vegetarian.

I've been told that a bit of umeboshi vinegar in the soy sauce also helps to give a fish sauce flavour but I don't have a clue what fish sauce tastes like either
